CENTENARY COLLEGE HOSTS SUMMER CULTURE AND LANGUAGE PROGRAM

For the 17th year, Centenary College in New Jersey hosted an intensive Summer Culture and Language Program for international students to learn about American culture and the English language. During the six-week program, students participated in an English pronunciation enrichment program and took a four-credit course in Advanced English as a Second Language reading and writing. Students had the opportunity to experience American culture through extracurricular activities such as tours, cultural events, and a strong residential life program. Many particiapnts in this program will enroll as full-time Centenary students in the fall semester.

In addition to the summer culture and language immersion program, Centenary College offers a year-long ESL program, providing students with individualized tutoring and skills training in reading and writing. Each year, approximately 100 students from around the world attend Centenary and take advantage of the strong support system available for international students (http://oip.centenarycollege.edu/).

CANISIUS COLLEGE ANNOUNCES NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

Starting this fall, Canisius College in Western New York will add ten new academic degree programs to its undergraduate and graduate curricula. These programs build upon the broad range of options already available for students: more than 1,000 course offerings and 80 distinct majors, minors, and special programs.

In the fields of science and engineering, undergraduate students will now be able to receive degrees in Operations Research and in Computational Science. Graduate students can complete an online master’s degree program in Anthrozoology, a new field of study that studies human-animal interactions in science, industry, agriculture, conservation and veterinary medicine. To meet the growing demand in the health fields, Canisius will offer an undergraduate degree in Health and Wellness, and master’s degrees in Applied Nutrition, School and Community Health, and Respiratory Care.

Students at Canisius will also be able to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Sport Management or a Master’s degree in International Business. Lastly, the college will now offer a Specialized Studies Program, which enables students to develop their own majors and degree plans by combining courses from different departments.

This summer, several Mount Holyoke College students are participating in academic exchange programs abroad and are blogging about their experiences from all corners of the world – from Lima, to Venice, to Santiago, to Brussels. Read about how a Chinese student faces challenges with children’s welfare policy in Dakar, how a Vietnamese student integrates media and economics in Shanghai, and how a Korean-Australian attempts to learn Chinese in Beijing. These students’ summer travels reveal that direct interaction with diverse communities can be an important part of the overall educational experience.
